Symposium 100 Jahre Institut für Kartografie und Geoinformation an der ETH Zürich

Das Institut für Kartografie und Geoinformation wurde 1925 von Prof. Eduard Imhof gegründet und ist das älteste akademische kartografische Institut weltweit. Im 2-tägigen Festsymposium wird Rückblick auf die Aktivitäten des Instituts gehalten und es werden aktuelle Projekte vorgestellt. Gleichzeitig erscheint eine 270-seitige Festschrift, welche die Geschichte des Instituts und der Vorgängerprofessuren beschreibt. Alle ehemaligen Mitglieder des Instituts, Forschungspartner/innen und weitere Interessentinnen und Interessenten sind herzlich zu diesem Anlass eingeladen.

Schweizer Erfolge bei der europäischen und der internationalen Geographie-Olympiade
Vom 29.6.-3.7. fand in Vilnius die Europäische Geographie-Olympiade statt.
Je eine Bronzemedaille ging an Alex Schmid (Gymnasium Bäumlihof, BS) und Elia Enea Hardegger (Gymnasium Neufeld, BE). Ausserdem dabei war Julian Schatt (Kantonsschule Seetal, LU).
Vom 26. Juli bis zum 1. August trafen sich in Bangkok Jugendliche aus 47 Ländern. An der 21. Internationalen Geographie-Olympiade (iGeo) schlossen sie grenzübergreifende Freundschaften, erkundeten Thailand und widmeten sich ihrem gemeinsamen Lieblingsfach. Die Schweizer Delegation wird diese Woche mit zwei Medaillen und zahlreichen Erinnerungen im Gepäck nach Hause kommen.
Eine Silbermedaille ging an Elia Hardegger (Gymnasium Neufeld, BE). Alex Schmid (Gymnasium Bäumlihof, BS) holte eine Bronzemedaille. Ausserdem gehörten Sorin Schmassmann (Gymnasium Kirchenfeld, BE) und Julian Schatt (Kantonsschule Seetal, LU) zur Delegation. Das Fürstentum Liechtenstein war zum ersten Mal überhaupt an der iGeo am Start, vertreten durch Florian Bürzle (Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium, FL).

Feminist Geographies as Socially Engaged Research
On June 17, 2025 in Bern the Swiss Feminist Geographies thematic group organized a day on Feminist Geographies as Socially Engaged Research. It was a pleasure to spend the day with fellow Swiss Feminist Researcher, doing important things, as one of the participants said, while also sharing laughter, ideas, and inspiration.
The day started with a roundtable with different and rich shared experiences and approaches to the idea of how care shapes research practice from Karin Schwiter, Aurora Ruggeri, Zali Fung, Soledad Castro, and Isabelle Kloepper. Followed by a discussion in small groups to explore different aspects of care, for ourselves, our research partners, and in academia.
After catching up with friends and meeting new colleagues, and enjoying a lovely lunch, we began the afternoon programme. We had two very inspiring workshops focusing on methodology: one led by Maaret Jokela-Pansini on “Arts-based methods as socially engaged research practices” and another led by Yvonne Riaño on “Working with or about a population group? Perspectives on socially engaged research, based on the example of the Minga methodology”. We ended the day with a decolonial tour through Bern and some drinks next to the Aare River to celebrate the day.
The Feminist Geographies as Socially Engaged Research event was special and inspiring. In sum, the day was: selfcare, an example of slow scholarship, and a lived example of sharing is caring.
